AALU to Help Americans Become Fiscally Responsible

David Stertzer, Nat Perlmutter, and I recently met wit1h David Walker, former Comptroller General of the U.S.

Many of you were fortunate to see and hear Dave when he spoke at our last two Annual Meetings. You may view a recording of this presentation for free at our online knowledge center, available as a link through www.aalu.org He was also the subject of a cover story in the Quarterly magazine. Dave is now president and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to raising public awareness of the severity and urgency of the enormous fiscal challenges facing our country. Pete Peterson has endowed this foundation with one billion dollars!

I encourage you to go to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation's web site (www.pgpf.org) and become a supporter. There is no cost to do so! While there, you can download their "Citizens Guide" which provides a clear and concise summary of where our nation stands financially and where it is headed fiscally. This is a terrific piece to share with your clients. You can also establish a link to the Foundation on your company web site, something that AALU is planning to do.

Later this month, the Foundation is releasing a documentary called "I.O.U.S.A." The film tells the story of America's large and growing fiscal challenge. It covers our nation's four key deficits: budget, savings, balance of payments/trade, and worst of all, our leadership deficit.

The film is fact-based, nonpartisan and non-ideological. It features Warren Buffett, Alan Greenspan, Paul Volcker, Pete Peterson, Senators Kent Conrad and Judd Gregg, former Treasury Secretaries Paul O'Neill and Robert Rubin, former CBO chief Alice Rivlin, Rep. Ron Paul, Bob Bixby, and David Walker.

The film has begun showing in 13 cities around the country. Immediately following the movie, audience members will be treated to a 45-minute Town Hall meeting on the U.S. economy, live via satellite from Omaha, Nebraska and featuring Warren Buffett, Bill Novelli of AARP, Bill Niskanen of the CATO Institute, Pete Peterson and David Walker. You can read the full transcript of the town hall and locate a theater near you by visiting www.iousathemovie.com.

Through Foundation Partners, the group is working to raise financial literacy levels in communities across the country and they specifically advocate the importance of "formulating a financial plan" on their web site.

This is part of an overall effort AALU is working on to develop opportunities to channel the enormous expertise within our membership and be a constructive force in the broader dialogue that will occur in the years ahead. No one disputes that our elected leaders in the coming years face difficult choices. Our advice, products, and services are not the problem; they should be considered part of the solution!

The AALU Board of Directors and the executive staff will continue to develop partnerships and alliances that will further enhance fulfilling AALU's mission.

AALU members understand and appreciate fiscal responsibility and because of that, I strongly encourage you to get take the following steps today:
